Would You Rather Read Minds… or Predict the Future?

In the year 2089, the question wasn’t philosophical anymore.

It was mandatory.

On your eighteenth birthday, every citizen of the United Earth Federation had to choose:

Read minds…

or predict the future.

The procedure only worked once. A neural implant called the Oracle Divide permanently rewired part of the brain. No one could have both.

The Mind Readers became negotiators, therapists, interrogators, lovers impossible to lie to.

The Future Seers became investors, generals, engineers, people who could glimpse fragments of what was coming.

Society split in two.

And everyone secretly believed the other side had chosen better.

Kai sat in the white chamber staring at the holographic prompt floating in front of him.

CHOOSE.

His mother had chosen mind reading. It destroyed her marriage within three years.

His father had chosen future sight. He became rich… but emotionally distant, as if he’d already lived every conversation before it happened.

Kai’s hands trembled.

“What happens if I choose neither?” he asked.

The technician smiled sadly.

“Humanity tried that already.”

Kai looked through the glass wall at the city below — glowing towers, silent drone traffic, giant holographic ads flickering across the clouds.

One ad repeated endlessly:

THE FUTURE REWARDS CLARITY.

Another answered from a nearby building:

TRUTH BEGINS IN THE MIND.

He closed his eyes.

If he could read minds, he’d know who truly loved him.
He’d never be manipulated again.
Never be betrayed.

But he’d also hear the darkness people hid.
The jealousy.
The fear.
The constant noise beneath human smiles.

If he could predict the future…

he could avoid pain.

But maybe he’d stop living in the present altogether.

The technician interrupted his thoughts.

“Most people regret their choice eventually.”

“That’s comforting,” Kai muttered.

The room dimmed.

Ten seconds remained.

Suddenly, a voice echoed in his head.

Choose the future.

Kai froze.

He looked around wildly.

The technician hadn’t spoken.

Again, the voice whispered:

Choose the future… before they find out what you really are.

His pulse exploded.

Someone was reading his mind.

Which meant one terrifying thing:

He hadn’t chosen yet…

but somehow,

someone already knew what he was going to become.
